ENCOOLER SYSTEMS
INTRODUCTION
The SPC Encooler is a versatile way of dissipating the heat gain in a power electronics enclosure.
Each one is purpose-built to cope with a specific set of design conditions, and they come in a wide
variety of physical configurations. The heat pipe at the heart of the Encooler has no moving parts.
Heat transfer occurs passively and continuously, even when temperature differences between the interior
and the exterior of your power electronics enclosure are small.

PRINCIPLES OF OPERATION
The Encooler uses heat-pipe technology to remove heat energy from enclosed equipment by passive means. The
system is entirely self-contained; no air enters the equipment enclosure and the only moving parts are the fans.
Each Encooler consists of two independent chambers connected by one or more sealed heat pipes.
Hot internal air from the equipment enclosure cycles through the lower chamber; cooler ambient
air passes through the upper chamber. One end of the heat pipe passes through the lower chamber,
the other passes through the upper chamber.
A phase-change liquid within the heat pipe evaporates when warm internal air passes across it.
The vapour rises within the pipe to the upper chamber where cooler ambient air causes it to
condense, release its energy, then flow back down the heat pipe. The constant cycle of
evaporation and condensation within the sealed heat pipe extracts heat energy from the enclosure
and dissipates it to the surrounding air.

Internal and external air flows are maintained by long-life fans.

DESIGN RESOURCE
A number of configurations have already been developed and include roof and door-mounted units, with heat extraction rates ranging from 300W to 4,000W.
We make each Encooler to fit a specific application. Each one maintains a steady internal temperature in the face of a unique set of design conditions. Your circumstances may well be different. Why not challenge our ingenuity by asking us to dissipate the heat gain in your power electronics application? Better still, challenge us to design an Encooler that will do the job more efficiently and cost-effectively than any other comparable system.
We have more than 15 years' experience of using heat pipes to remove or recycle heat energy. From our design and manufacturing plant in Leicester, we supply an international market includes constant-temperature cooling applications in Europe and throughout the Middle East.
